Amnat Ruenroeng outpoints Zou Shiming
IBF flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng (15-0, 5 KOs) defeated previously unbeaten two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming (6-1, 1 KOs) by a unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort in Macao, China.
With the capacity crowd behind him, Zou challenged a man he had already beaten twice as a amateur, but the Chinese boxer ultimately came up short in his first world title fight as a professional.
Zou and Amnat met for the fourth time in their careers, with Zou leading 2-1 in amateur bouts, but the Thai fighter levelled the score with all the judges scoring the bout 116-111 in his favour.
It was a very tactical bout with both looking to counterpunch.
Zou dropped Amnat with a left in round two before Amnat threw down Zou in the next round.
There was a lot of holding by the champion but when he did punch he nailed Zou with accurate shots and his jabs were building up a points advantage.
The challenger became frustrated from having to chase Amnat. Zou landed a couple of rights in the 12th but he couldn't follow them up and it was Amnat who remained unbeaten when the announcer declared victory for the defending champion.
