Canelo-Kirkland moved to May 9
Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya has announced the scheduled May 2 fight between Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland has been moved to May 9 and will now be held at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
The move comes after Friday's announcement that the long-awaited showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will take place on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"The week around Cinco de Mayo will be the biggest in years for boxing, bridging the present and the future as the three biggest stars in the sport all step into the ring in just a seven-day period," said De La Hoya.
"It is my hope and belief that this May week will usher in a new era of our sport, one in which we as a sport give fans what they want, the best facing the best."
Both De La Hoya and Alvarez have said all along they would only move the fight off that date to make way for Mayweather-Pacquiao.
"Right from the start Canelo has always said the only fight he would move from his date May 2 was obviously the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which we did," added De La Hoya.
The original venue, the Alamodome in San Antonio, was not available on May 9, so the bout was switched to Minute Maid Park.
It will be the first boxing event to take place at the stadium, which opened in 2000.
