WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) stopped former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) in the third round on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The unbeaten champion from Kazakhstan put Geale down in the second round with a flurry of blows. Golovkin finished the Australian with a right to the head in the third that put him down on his back. Geale got back on his feet but the referee Mike Ortega stopped it due to him being too hurt.

On the actual knockout blow, Golovkin was hit first from a right hand by Geale, but he was still able to throw his own right hand that nailed the challenger and ended the fight. It was the champions's 17th straight knockout victory.

Golovkin said: "Yes, absolutely the knockout is very important, not just for me, not just for my team, but for everybody. This is big drama show."

Golovkin called for a unification bout with WBC champion Miguel Cotto.

"I want a unification fight. I want who is the best in the middleweight division," he added. "Miguel Cotto - I respect him 100 percent."

Also on the card, in a fight between unbeaten heavyweights, Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10 KOs) narrowly outpointed Mike Perez (20-1-1, 12 KOs) by a 12 round split decision.

The judges’ scores were 114-113, 115-113 for Jennings and 114-113 for Perez.

Cuban southpaw Perez, now living in Ireland, dominated the action for the first 6 rounds landing the bigger, cleaner shots. But the American came on strong late on.

Jennings continued to be the more active after Perez faded, and he was winning the final round when referee Harvey Dock deducted a point from Perez for hitting on the break. If not for the point deduction, the fight would of been scored a draw.

With the win, Jenning will now challenge for the WBC heavyweight championship against the winner of the bout between titleholder Bermane Stiverne and mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder.

Other results on the card:

Ola Afolabi W Anthony Caputo Smith RTD 3

Dusty Hernandez Harrison W Wilfredo Acuna UD 8
