Eubank Jr captures British belt, Blackwell taken to hospital
Chris Eubank Jr (22-1, 17 KOs) dethroned British champion Nick Blackwell (19-4-1, 8 KOs) by 10th round stoppage on Saturday night at Wembley Arena in London.
It was a good action fight that was overshadowed by concern for Blackwell, who was taken from the ring on a stretcher to hospital.
Eubank was landing hard shots to head and body from the start as Blackwell marched forward showing his toughness throughout.
A flurry of jabs and uppercuts left the defending champion's nose bloodied and Blackwell did well to remain on his feet.
Blackwell had his moments but the harder punches was coming from the challenger.
Eubank was always in control but was briefly distracted in the fifth when he started goading WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, who handed Eubank his only defeat and was supporting Blackwell from ringside. Blackwell landed a right hook but Eubank soon regained his composure and dominated the following rounds.
By the 10th Blackwell's left eye was swollen and almost closed and referee Victor Loughlin stopped the fight on the advice of the ringside doctor.
