Jhonny Gonzalez defeats Atwell by technical decision
WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 48 KO’s) defeated Guyanese challenger Clive Atwell (12-1-1, 7 KO’s) by a 10 round technical decision on Saturday night at the Convention Center in Acapulco, Mexico.
The Mexican dominated the entire fight with his jab and power shots. Atwell was deducted points for fouling Gonzalez in rounds 7 and 10.
The bout was stopped after Gonzalez was cut over his left eye from a head-butt and the referee determined the champion was unable to continue.
The judges had Gonzalez winning by scores of 99-89, 96-92 and 98-90.
Gonzalez stopped Abner Mares in the first round in August last year to win the WBC 126 lb title in a big upset win.
They was scheduled to face each other in a rematch, but Mares suffered an injury during training resulting in the cancelation of the fight.
