Kevin Mitchell retires
Former British and Commonwealth super featherweight champion Kevin Mitchell (39-4, 29 KOs) has retired from boxing.
Mitchell withdrew from his European lightweight title bout against Finland's Edis Tatli on March 18 and called time on his career.
"I was in the gym training for the Edis Tatli fight and I just didn't really feel that I have enough to go through the training once again," said Mitchell.
"I've been fighting for 22 years. It is a long time to be putting your body through all you have to do to get right for a fight and my body has said enough is enough."
The Dagenham boxer fought twice for a world title, but lost each time.
Mitchell was defeated by then WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns by a fourth round stoppage in September 2012 in his first world title attempt. He then challenged WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares last May. Mitchell dropped Linares in the fifth round only to suffer a horrific cut and be knocked down and stopped in the 10th round.
Mitchell was halted in the fifth round by Ismael Barroso in December in his final bout.
