Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares to fight on August 29
Leo Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KOs) will fight Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs) in a featherweight bout on August 29 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The two Mexican, Southern California-based fighters have both been in exciting fights and won world titles in multiple divisions but recently have been in need of better opposition - until now.
Santa Cruz, a former IBF bantamweight champion and reigning WBC super bantamweight champion, has made several title defences against mediocre challengers and is coming off a lopsided ponts win over journeyman Jose Cayetano in a non-title bout at featherweight on the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao undercard on May 2, while Mares, a former IBF bantamweight, WBC super bantamweight and WBC featherweight champion, has had three easy fights since he was knocked out in one round by Jhonny Gonzalez in a major upset in August 2013.
Mares, 29, said: "I'm really excited for this fight. It's a fight the fans have been asking for, and I'm ready to give them what they want, a great show and a great victory."
Santa Cruz, 26, said: "This fight means so much to me because I know it is what the fans have been waiting for. The opportunity to fight at Staples Center against a Mexican warrior and great fighter in Abner Mares is one that I plan on taking very seriously. A win is going to take one of us to the next level.”
