Paulie Malignaggi retires from boxing
Two-weight world champion Paulie Malignaggi has confirmed his retirement from boxing following last Saturday's defeat to British contender Sam Eggington at London's O2.
Malignaggi, 36, who has won world titles at welterweight and light welterweight, made the announcement after suffering his eighth professional defeat as Eggington stopped him in the eighth round on the undercard of Tony Bellew vs David Haye.
Malignaggi will continue his career as a boxing commentator for Showtime, Fox Sports and Sky Sports.
"Nineteen years ago today, I entered the ring for the first time as an amateur. That makes this as good a time as any to announce my retirement from competition," said Malignaggi.
"My life is in a place 19 years later that I never dreamed it could be in, and I have boxing to thank for that.
"I'm looking forward to a long, fruitful career now behind the mic, staying around the sport I love so much and the sport that changed my life for the better."
The American won 36 of his 44 pro contests, while four of his eight defeats came in world title fights.
