Cleverly to fight on August 17
WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0) will make his sixth world title defence against an as yet to be named opponent at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena on August 17.
Promoter Frank Warren is hoping to secure Russian Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1) for the Welshman's next outing, but the IBF have ordered title holder Bernard Hopkins to fight Kovalev, who became mandatory challenger on Friday, after knocking out American Cornelius White.
Hopkins was due to defend against his mandatory challenger and former Cleverly foe Karo Murat on July 13. This was abandoned after Murat was unable to obtain a visa to enter the US.
Kovalev must now decide whether to next take on Cleverly in Wales, or Hopkins in America.
Cleverly, 26, last defended his title in April, blitzing mandatory challenger Robin Krasniqi over the 12 rounds to win a unanimous decision at Wembley Arena.
