Beltran blasts out Ao but WBO title remains vacant
Ray Beltran (30-7-1, 18 KOs) stopped two-time world champion Takahiro Ao (27-4-1, 12 KOs) in the second round on Friday night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
But the Mexican did not win the vacant WBO lightweight title at stake because he was unable to make the weight.
Only Ao was eligible to win the title after Beltan weighed in 4 pounds over the 135-pound limit.
Beltran dropped the Japanese fighter with a huge right hand in the second round and got the stoppage with his follow up barrage.
Had Beltran made weight this would have been the third occasion he has challenged for the title. He was held to a draw in September 2013 by then champion Ricky Burns in Scotland, although most thought Beltran had won, before losing a one-sided decision to previous champion Terence Crawford in November.
