Burns splits with Warren
WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns has parted company with promoter Frank Warren, according to the Coatbridge fighter's manager Alex Morrison.
This comes after the postponement of Burns' unification fight with IBF champion Miguel Vazquez. The fight was moved from March 16 to April 20 however, with Burns now leaving Warren the fight is likely now canceled unless Burns still wants to face Vazquez with a different promoter.
Morrison said "I regret it has come to this because I have known Frank for 40 years but it has to be for Ricky's sake. I felt we had to stop Ricky stagnating.
Two fights have been called off after he has trained hard for them and it was not even certain that the bout with Vazquez would have gone ahead on 20 April.
In fact I doubt very much that fight was ever going to happen."
With the news, the future fights for Burns is unclear. The other big fight offer that was made to Burns by Golden Boy Promotions for him to fight a unification bout against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner was reportedly turned down by Morrison, so it's not as if this changes anything in terms of Burns all of a sudden now being available to fight Broner.
Besides, I doubt that the offer is good anymore because Golden Boy is now interested in matching Broner against WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi.
