Burns to defend against unbeaten Gonzalez on May 11
WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns will defend his title against unbeaten Jose Gonzalez at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on May 11, live on Sky Sports.
Eddie Hearn was given five days by the WBO to arrange a title fight with Puerto Rican Gonzalez (22-0) or a purse bid would have been ordered according to the Matchroom promoter.
"We managed to set it up with two and half hours to spare. If we hadn't the fight would have been open to the highest bidder," said Hearn.
Burns (35-2) split with Frank Warren following a frustrating few months, the postponement of the unification fight with IBF champion Mexican Miguel Vazquez in March followed postponements of defences against Liam Walsh then Jose Ocampo, who was a replacement for Walsh after he was injured in a car crash, in December.
Now the Scotsman can focus on his next defence in May.
"He's a big puncher with a great KO record, but I've been in with big punchers before and that doesn't worry me in the sightest. It's great to have the date and name sorted now so I can just focus on getting myself in great shape for a big night in Glasgow," said Burns.
