Golovkin halts Murray in eleven
World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) stopped Britain's Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) in the 11th round on Saturday night at the Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
The Kazakh fighter dropped Murray twice in round 4 and once in round 10 before referee Luis Pabon eventually rescued the challenger from taking further punishment in the 11th.
In the opening rounds, Murray fought off the back foot, fending off punches with a tight guard as Golovkin stalked forward.
Golovkin soon started to connect and dropped Murray twice in the 4th, both times with body shots.
Murray withstood further punishment as the fight continued and was left with a bloodied face after stinging uppercuts in the 6th.
The St Helens man bravely fought back and landed some solid combinations of his own but this was only a brief spell of success and he was sent crashing to the canvas by a huge right in the 10th. Murray made it to his feet by the count of eight, but it appeared only a matter of time until Golovkin scored his 19th straight stoppage.
And it came in the next round as Golovkin drove Murray to the ropes and connected with more hard shots until Pabon intervened and waved off the fight at 2:10 of the round.
With the win, Golovkin has now made 13 successful defences of his WBA belt. He also holds the IBO and 'Interim' WBC middleweight titles.
