Mitchell halts Estrada to set up world title shot
British lightweight Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29 KOs) scored a 8th round stoppage over Daniel Estrada (32-4-1, 24 KOs) on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London.
Mitchell totally dominated the Mexican fighter from start to finish. The East Londoner dropped Estrada with a left hook to the head in the third round and Estrada looked as if he would go down again as Mitchell continued to hurt him with several hard shots.
Estrada was taking severe punishment in rounds 6 and 7 and his right eye was badly swollen up from all the left hooks Mitchell was landing.
In the 8th, Mitchell unleashed a six-punch combination and referee Ian John-Lewis waved it off and saved Estrada from any more damage at 1:12 of the round.
Mitchell claimed the vacant WBC silver belt and is now the number one contender for Venezuelan Jorge Linares's world title. He has now won his last six fights since being stopped in the fourth round by then WBO champion Ricky Burns in 2012.
