Kiko Martinez KO's Mathebula in nine
IBF super bantamweight title, champion Kiko Martinez (30-4, 22 KO’s) stopped challenger Jeffery Mathebula (27-5-2, 14 KO’s) in the 9th round on Saturday night at the Pabellon Esperanza Lag, Elche, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain.
The 27-year-old Martinez knocked the 5’11″ Mathebula to the canvas in the 9th round with a series of hard shots. The fight was then halted by referee Eddie Claudio.
The 5’5″ Martinez was much too powerful for the slender Mathebula and he made sure that he didn’t give him any room to use his reach advantage in the fight. Martinez stayed with Mathebula the entire fight, going anywhere he would go in the ring to batter him with shots. Mathebula proved to be no match for Martinez on the inside and he took enormous punishment in the fight from start to finish.
With this victory we could see Martinez possibly facing Carl Frampton in a rematch in 2014.
