Masterful Marquez outpoints Alvarado
Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) defeated Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in a WBO welterweight eliminator bout at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA.
The final judges scores were 117-109, 117-109 and 119-109. Marquez dropped Alvarado in the 8th. Alvarado returned the favor by knocking Marquez down in the 9th.
It was a dominant performance from Marquez, who was in control from the early rounds, dictating the pace and avoiding Alvarado's power shots with good head movement.
In the 8th, Marquez nailed Alvarado with a huge right hand that put him down on the canvas badly hurt. Alvarado got up by the count of 7, and he was able to make it out of the round due to the bell sounding moments later. However, the knockdown seemed to help wake up Alvarado as he came out for the 9th with more energy and focus.
With just over two minutes left in the round, he got into a wild exchange and beat Marquez to the punch with a short right that dropped the seven-time world champion to the canvas.
Marquez got up and regained control of the fight though, pressing the action through to the 10th. In the 11th another short right hand from Alvarado almost knocked Marquez down again. His knees bent and he fell back slightly but somehow managed to stay on his feet.
The 40-year-old Marquez, who has won titles in four weight classes, is now expected to fight Manny Pacquiao for the 5th time in the autumn.
With the victory, Marquez becomes mandatory challenger to WBO welterweight champion Pacquiao.
