Matthysse overpowers Provodnikov
Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) defeated Ruslan Provodnikov (27-4, 17 KOs) by majority decision in a hard-fought 12 round light welterweight contest on Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York.
Matthysse claimed the points win by scores of 115-113 twice, while the third judge had it 114-114.
Argentina's Matthysse made a strong start, getting off his punches as Provodnikov came right at him. Provodnikov was cut over his left eye after a head clash in the second round, but the Russian continued to march forward as they exchanged punches.
Both fighters rocked each other with hard shots in a good action fourth round.
As the fight progressed, Matthysse was able to capitalize on his better boxing skills and head movement, while landing combinations to the head and body.
Provodnikov's face was a bloody mess by the end of the sixth round, however, he came back to land his own power shots in rounds eight and nine.
By the 10th round, Matthysse's right eye was swelling as Provodnikov seemed to connect with the harder shots in the later rounds, but Matthysse stood up to the punches until the final bell.
After the fight Matthysse said: “I feel very happy with this win tonight, Ruslan’s a tough guy, and he took everything I threw at him. I have a lot of respect for him. I’m ready for the next big fight. I’d like to take on the winner of (Floyd) Mayweather-(Manny) Pacquiao."
