Richar Abril-Derry Mathews world title fight rescheduled for April 18
WBA lightweight champion Richar Abril's defence against British lightweight Derry Mathews has been rescheduled for April 18 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool.
The Cuban was originally set to defend his 135-pound title against Mathews on March 6 but withdrew after being diagnosed with a viral infection.
"I’m delighted that Abril kept to his word,” said Mathews. “My promoter, Frank Warren, and my management team have worked hard behind the scenes to keep my dream alive and I’m really grateful.
“This is the culmination of my career and the moment I’ve been waiting for. I will be fitter, sharper, stronger and hungrier than ever before to make sure I win the WBA title in front of my home crowd."
Mathews will still appear on March 6, on the undercard of the world super flyweight title fight between Zolani Tete and Paul Butler at the same venue, against an opponent to be determined.
