Roman Gonzalez stops Yaegashi to win WBC flyweight title
Unbeaten Nicaraguan Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (40-0, 34 KOs) stopped Japan's Akira Yaegashi (20-4, 10 KOs) in the ninth round to capture the WBC flyweight title on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.
Gonzalez dominated Yaegashi, dropping him in the third and then continued to punish the defending champion until the referee halted the bout at 2:24 of the ninth round after Gonzalez floored his opponent with an uppercut.
With the win, Gonzalez collected his third world championship.
Also on the card, Japan's Naoya Inoue (7-0, 6 KOs) stopped Thai challenger Samartlek Kokietgym (17-5, 5 KOs) in the 11th round in the first defence of his WBC light flyweight title.
Inoue dropped Kokietgym in the 4th and 6th round.
