Stevenson decisions Fonfara to retain WBC title
WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (24-1, 20 KO’s) defeated Andrzej Fonfara (25-3, 15 KO’s) by a12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
The Haiti-born champion dropped Fonfara with a left to the head in the opening round, and a left to the body in round 5. But the Pole proved a brave opponent and came back strongly in the second half of the fight, knocking Stevenson down in round 9 from a left-right combination. However, Stevenson rallied from the shock knockdown and had the better of the final three rounds to secure victory on all three scorecards, 115-110, 115-110 and 116-109.
It was the first time Stevenson, who now represents Canada, had been taken the distance since 2007, having stopped all his opponents in his last 15 bouts.
