Chavez Jr challenges Martin Murray for August 3 in Mexico City
Julio Cesar Chavez (46-1-1) has challenged Britain's middleweight contender Martin Murray (25-1-1) for August 3 and he wants the fight to take place in Mexico City.
Chavez Jr, who has pushed back his return from June 22, wants Murray to come to Mexico City on August 3, hoping to make it a fight for the interim WBC middleweight title.
Though Brian Vera is already set to be his opponent, the Mexican boxer would like to face someone he believes is toughter.
"Hopefully Murray will be encouraged to come and face me in Mexico City. Our fight could be for the WBC interim world title. I want the best opponent possible, Chavez said.
Many felt the British boxer did enough to beat Sergio Martinez last month, however Murray lost a 12 round unanimous decision for the WBC middleweight title at the Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires Distrito Federal, Argentina.
This would be a fight where both guys are coming off losses, as Chavez Jr was soundly beaten by Martinez in September by a 12 round unanimous decision.
The difference being this was against a relatively healthy Martinez whereas he broke his left hand early in the fight against Murray and came into the fight with a bad right knee that hadn't fully recovered after having torn cartilage in it fighting Chavez Jr.
I think it goes without saying that Murray rather than Vera against Chavez Jr, with due respect to the gritty and likeable Vera, would be a more intriguing fight.
