Lopez ready to dish it out and take it against Maidana
Josesito Lopez (30-5), a crowd pleasing boxer known for his willingness to mix it up, faces Marcos Maidana (33-3) in a welterweight bout on Saturday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, live on BoxNation.
Mexican American Lopez pits against Argentine puncher Marcos Maidana over 12 rounds with Maidana's WBA Inter-continental welterweight title on the line, but more importantly the winner stays relevant at 147 lbs. Both have featured in high-profiled fights before, with mixed results.
In December 2010, Maidana came close to stopping Amir Khan before losing on points in a WBA light welterweight title fight, then 14 months later he was widely outboxed by Devon Alexander.
In June 2012, Lopez stopped Victor Ortiz in nine rounds which earned him a crack at WBC 11st king Saul Alvarez three months later - he was stopped in five.
Maidana is a massive puncher who can be outboxed, while Lopez is a gutsy fighter who will take a shot to land one. Neither is the complete article, yet match them and they will make for an entertaining fight as both will unabashedly engage in toe-to-toe warfare.
"As fights go on, I have to be a little smarter," said Lopez. "That's just the way I fight. When I find myself in trouble, the only way to get out is fighting back. I'll take a risk if it means pulling off a great punch or great combination that'll change things around."
Maidana said "I know Josesito likes to stand and trade, that's what I do and why it's going to be an exciting fight. My plan is to go toe-to-toe. Pressure is the key."
