Miguel Cotto demolishes Delvin Rodriguez
Miguel Cotto (38-4) revitalised his career with a 3rd round stoppage of Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-3) on Saturday night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.
The Puerto Rican entered the ring having lost his last two bouts against Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout on unanimous decisions.
But Cotto, 32, fighting for the first time with Freddy Roach in his corner, looked the fighter of his heyday when he produced the 31st knockout of his career with a dominant display against Dominican opponent Rodriguez.
In the opening round Cotto went straight on the offensive landing a series of left hooks to the body. A strong combination that ended with a left hook to the head staggered Rodriguez at the end of the 2nd and the end was near.
And that came 18 seconds into the 3rd after Cotto unleased a fierce combinataion that dropped Rodriguez to the canvas and prompted referee Frank Santore Jr. to step in and wave the contest off.
Rodriguez wasn't in the same class of fighter that Cotto had faced for the better part of the last 10 years, but it was nonetheless an impressive and dominant victory that sets Cotto up for big fights against the likes of Sergio Martinez, Saul Alvarez and perhaps down the road Mayweather again.
